When you put your home up for sale, you know you need to keep it clean. What many people don’t realize is that cleaning and de-cluttering are two separate things.

De-cluttering requires an objective eye which is not easy for any homeowner. The knick knacks and what-nots that we consider to be the comforts of home, the potential buyer may see as clutter. De-cluttering is a main focus of a home stager.

To get an idea of what might be considered clutter, look at pictures of model homes, or home interior design magazines. While you don’t want to redecorate, look at what’s included and what’s missing in these photos. They tend to be impersonal and lack what many of us see as “homey” touches.

So compare each room in your home to the images you see.

Since you’re planning on moving any way, get boxes and begin packing. Start boxing the items that you love but don’t need such as pictures of your family or your child’s kindergarten artwork. Your rooms will begin to look bigger and less cluttered. Tour every room two to three times to ensure that you have removed every non-essential item from view. For those items that cannot be packed even though you don’t use them every day, consider storing them in a place that won’t be immediately obvious to the buyer. You should also consider asking a family member, friend, or neighbor to hold them for you.

This will be extra hard if you have children. Leave them access to the toys, but agree to keep them packed away when they aren’t in use.

Children aren’t the only ones in love with their toys. You can try the same solution for your favorite movies, CDs, and books. Shelves should not be overflowing, and if you have a nice display case for some treasured collectible, having only one or two items in it will make the area look larger and more appealing.

This process will help sell your home and give you a leg up when it comes time for the big move.

This will also keep your home clean for you. With fewer items around the house, there is less to pick up and put away if the Realtor calls and wants to show the property. Keeping everything clean will also be easier when there are fewer things to dust and clean around, meaning you have less work to do to be ready to sell your home.
