The federal government has given grant money for school districts in Clarksville-Montgomery County near Fort Campbell. Race to the Top grant money will be used to finance the STEM academy at Kenwood High school which is located about six miles east of the Fort Campbell Eastern boundary and just four miles north of Clarksville, TN.
The STEM Academy has been created to implement ground-breaking programs with an emphasis on the sciences, new technologies, engineering, and mathematical education. Tennessee is one of only two states that are receiving this grant, and the surrounding area will then receive over one million dollars over the course of four years.
This STEM program also gets a donation of $50,000 from Dow Corning Foundation, parent company of Hemlock Semiconductor LLC, to purchase and integrate new equipment. The STEM Academy has been established at Kenwood High and chosen because of its location and its capacity for expansion within the facility. This program adds considerable prestige and value to the communities surrounding Fort Campbell.
This program is a pilot created to help intelligent students from all over the district in math and science disciplines by allowing them to have a hands-on approach to learning. They will be presented with challenges in the field of solar energy as well as being taught problem solving techniques. This will be beneficial to these students in all facets of their education. This will provide the students with real world practice, which is something that is not characteristically found in normal high schools.
