You may feel a little nervous about hiring professional movers if you’ve never done it before, but it can be a great way to reduce the stress of moving and free up a lot of time. Follow the guidelines below to find the company that’s just right for you.

Before you do anything else, give your house a thorough clearing out to get rid of anything you won’t be taking with you. This will save you money by making the packing process faster, and by allowing you to use a smaller van. The movers will need to come out and take an inventory before they can even give you an estimate, so this has to be done first. If you have a moving sale, you can even subsidize some of your costs.

Next, do your homework. Research companies in your area using online and other sources. Get referrals from friends and associates, and ask the companies for references. Verify the references by making a few phone calls.

Find out what kind of insurance coverage each company offers. Carefully examine each policy to make sure it covers everything you need. It’s a good idea to take photos of furniture and other items that could be damaged in transit, and have the photos date stamped; if you have to file a claim, you’ll have proof of the condition the item was in before the move.

Once you have all of your information, make sure it goes into your contract exactly the way you want it. There should be no questions about costs, scheduling, liability, etc., that aren’t explicitly covered in your contract.

Keep in mind that there are always going to be some things you won’t want to put in the moving van. Items with high monetary or sentimental value, legal documents, and family photographs are examples of things that should make the journey with you.

It takes a little effort to properly prepare for your professional move, but you’ll be amply rewarded for it by being able to relax and enjoy the trip to your new home, knowing that everything has been taken care of.
