When installing a waterfall or pond it is extremely important to choose the proper location. The ideal area will have a few hours in direct sun, and plenty of shade as well. Be sure that landscape drainage will not flow into the location you select. Most of all be certain that the pond is located in a spot which you and your family can enjoy.
The next step is to measure and plot out the area where the pond will go. The general shape of the overall plan should be lined out. Spray paint will work better for this than chalk, which can be rubbed away very easily. It is also possible for the area to be flagged. Utility companies need to be called before a shovel ever hits the dirt.
The sides of the pond need to be dug out in layers, so that they do not crumble. This will also be more pleasing to the eye and provide a sturdier place for plants to grow. Shovel the dirt from the pond into a hill for the waterfall. Make certain that the bottom of the pond is all one level. Remove the dirt where the stream will be also, and add it to the waterfall area.
Once the pond and stream have been dug out, you will need to put in the liner. First, pour sand into the pond area and cover the entire bottom evenly. It will take two or more people to set the liner in place, because it requires that you unfold it and then approach the area with it. Moving the liner along the ground is not acceptable. Be sure to purchase a good quality liner, as this is not the best place to skimp. It would be very unpleasant to have to redo all of your work just to replace a cheap liner.
After the liner, it is time to set up the equipment. This is when you add the pumps, water filters and a skimmer. Because you need an exterior outlet installed, it is best to hire an expert to do this.
Once the equipment has been installed, it is time to add rocks and gravel. Adding a protective layer over the liner and laying rocks over that is a good way to safeguard it and keep it stable. Putting in different sized river rocks and gravel to the bed of the pond will make it look pretty and will encourage plant and animal life. Utilize the garden hose to clean the rocks, and then pump the muddy water from the pond.
After you have the stream, waterfall, and pond lined and embellished with the rocks, be sure it is all clean. Use your hose to fill in the area with water. Unless you have a well, you will need to remove the chlorine from the water. Otherwise, the chemical can harm any wildlife you might add to the area.
Adding your fish and plants will complete the DIY project. Plant life will help to maintain and clean and healthy pond. You will need to wait a few of weeks after placing the plants before putting in any fish. Doing so will give the plants time to add nutrients to the water, causing the fish’s start to be healthier.
