Low Water Pressure In Your Home; What Are The Causes?

One thing’s for sure: no household deserves low water pressure. This might not be obvious at first but it becomes an issue when you find yourself in the bathroom and kitchen and getting less than perfect water pressure. One possible reason for low water pressure is newly-installed fixtures. But if the change in the pressure is sudden and erratic, this could very well mean a problem in one of your pipes. It’s good if you spot the root of problem early on, so you can say goodbye to that low water pressure problem already.

Faucet Style

Your faucet design could have a very big impact on your water pressure. Older houses make use of the older designs of faucets, which generally involves a washer and valve seat that determines its closing and closing. Water flow is simply controlled by how far away you twist the faucet handle that pulls the washer farther away from the valve seat. The wider the gap between the two, the bigger the opening becomes to let the water out, of course. Newer houses, on the other hand, have fixtures that adhere to the fairly recent water-saving guidelines. In the newer designs, the washers have been replaced by cartridges. These cartridges have aerators at their end, which in turn, control and limit the water flow. Due to residue buildup on the aerators’ holes, however, water pressure and flow can be restricted unnoticeably. This is because no matter how well water is treated and purified, it still carries microscopic particles, sediments, and tiny solid deposits which build up on the holes and over time, block the low water pressure.

Low pressure of hot water in your shower could be attributed to a defective anti-scald valve. You can look into replacing that if it’s the cause.

Problematic Pipes

Another possible cause for your lower water pressure could be that the flow is diverted somewhere. Your pipes could have burst, or are leaking to the point that water flowing towards your faucets is reduced. When this happens, you could be facing major repairs ahead of you. These openings are not only wasting you some water, it can serve as entry points for soil and other particles to enter, clogging your pipes and posing some health issues to your family. All these problems would require emergency plumbing care so being vigilant of your pipes’ condition would not only help in increasing your water’s pressure; it would save you from water damage and unplanned expenses.

Water Supply

You can check if the main water valve controlling the flow of water into your home is partially or totally shut off. This might just be the cause. You can also ask your neighbors if they are experiencing the same problem. The city could be making repairs on the water lines and has decreased the flow momentarily. Look for the water pressure regulator and check if a simple adjustment such as loosening a nut, would do the trick. Just be aware that setting it too high would eventually result to your pipes bursting.

Sometimes, you just have to leave it to the hands of the experts. If water supply has never been a problem in your area and suddenly you experience unexplainable low water pressure, it’s time to contact an emergency plumber. Trust me: they know what to do to solve all your plumbing problems.
