We conceptually refer to the non-domesticated animals, plants and various other organisms when we talk about wild life. Since the ancient times, man has been domesticating various species of wild plants and animals for benefit. Medicinal plants provided cure and stimulants, while the animals were a constant source of milk, fur, leather from hides, meat and wool. Fundamentally, in the ancient era, man was a hunter since he had no choice. However, in the modern times despite many sophisticated choices, the hunting activity is still carried out, perhaps sometimes illegally.

The population of a plant or animal species depends on various factors like the competition from other species, survival of the fittest, immigration and emigration, the chain reactions in the food chains and food webs as well as impact of other introduced species. Hence, many plant and animal populations are on a decline and even endangered, that is, in threat of becoming extinct.

Nevertheless, there are people worldwide who have contributed immensely towards saving and nurturing this precious wild life. One of this is being named as Edward R. Mercer the “Co Owner of Ventana Del Pacifico. He is one such world famous personality whose pioneering efforts to save the wild life of Costa Rica have been applauded worldwide.

Born in Canada, Ed made his visit in Costa Rica as a guest on 1988. However, so much admiration, charm and passion to Costa Rica comes in both the couples’s way (Ed and his wife) that merely in next to no time they made the country their home to live. He and his wife saw how the poachers indiscriminately hunting the wild life species of the scarlet macaws, white faced monkeys and the endangered sea turtles. Of these, the scarlet macaws were hunted for their beautiful plumage. The white faced monkeys were captured after killing the female monkeys so that the babies may be easily taken away and sold for pet and recreation purposes. Similarly, the sea turtles’ eggs were sold at lucrative prices in the foreign markets for aphrodisiacs. Along with, Ed made it certain that on one hand, the securities were beefed up to stop the entry of the hunters at the strategic points. While on the other hand, he planted thousands of almond trees, which not only significantly increased the population of scarlet macaws as it provided them with a rich source of food but also of the monkeys and birds. The sea turtles were granted protected nesting grounds for fresh hatching year after year as well.

In consequence, the sustained efforts of Ed to save these species that were on verge of extinction, won him a recent induction into a prestigious event in Los Angeles, USA. Hence, if an approach in conservation of wildlife is taken along with sustainable ecotourism and glaring examples of individual efforts like that of Edward R. Mercer, the wild life’s pool shall always remain abundant.
