Steel frame homes are gaining in popularity and for good reason. They are super easy to construct. There is little to no waste. Because recycled steel is the building material there are green and sustainable. Because they are made of steel which is many times more stronger then wood plus they are fire resistant because steel does not burn. And finally, a steel frame homes costs about the same to build as a wood framed house.

So why aren’t more homes being built this way?

There is no hard evidence as to why more homes are not being made from steel. Here are some ideas as to why this is happening.

Building with steel framing is still a developing industry. Getting people interested and educated in a steel home takes a while. Most people are not even aware something like this even exists in the market. Shock, awe and inspiration are typical emotions people get when they see the power a home like this possesses.

Contractors are not out promoting this product because all they have ever known is wood. Switching to steel from wood is stepping on their toes. Even though change is hard most contractors would welcome steel once they saw how easy and efficient it is to work with.

Getting a construction loan could be another issue. This one has come around recently though and is making getting a construction loan on steel frame homes much easier. Before the lending on steel home loosened up you needed to pay cash for the construction. If cash was the only way to build a home like this than obviously very few people could afford to build a steel framed home.

The conspiracy theorists in the steel home building world will tell you its because the big lumber and timber executives have the governments ears. These same conspiracy folks would also say that the insurance companies don’t want steel built homes because they like fires and it is the only way that they could keep people buying insurance policies.

Steel frame homes are here to stay, even is those conspiracy theorists are right in their beliefs.. It is growing every year. And quite frankly it is a matter of time until it replaces wood built homes. Because of how energy efficient a steel frame home is along with the massively large positive impact on our environment it can’t be ignored.

Here are some examples:

A steel built home can cut the costs of utilities by as much as 60%. A steel framed home uses 80% to 90% recycled steel which in turn gets 2 to 10 used cards out of the junk yard.. A steel frame home keeps between 3 to 10 truck loads of logs being harvested. Harvesting timber creates 7 times the CO2 greenhouse gas as compared to steel.

The benefits and features of a steel framed house could go on and on and on.. But with just these four simple facts you quickly understand that massive benefits a steel home provides. If you or someone you know is thinking about building a new home I highly urge you to consider building a steel frame home.
