The passive solar water heater is the most commonly used type. This type has a tank enclosed in a solar collector box. The water is then heated up passively by the heat emanating from the collector box. As soon as hot water is used there gushes in a new batch of cold water that is heated again by the collector box. This type of system is best utilized in mild climates only. You can also see this type of water heater being used in colder climates during summer to heat up the water in swimming pools.

Second is the active solar water heating systems. You can see this commonly in the United States. It utilizes the same principle as the passive heating system. The difference though is that it uses a pump to move cold water to be heated in the tank. This type actually uses an insulated indoor water tank to help retain the heat in the water far longer.

Third on the list is the solar collector types. This third type is said to be the most commonly used type in our generation. The copper plates that they use for this type is painted black. This has water tubes connected to it. The copper plates then heats up with the help of the sun and transfers heat to the water inside the water tubes. The water that is heated is stored in an indoor water tank to help retain the heat longer.
